The Loire is the home of many a famous name in the world of wine - Sancerre, Pouilly-Fume, Vouvray and Coteaux de Layon as well as Muscadet all have their homes in the beautiful Loire Valley. The wines are usually produced from Sauvignon Blanc (Sancerre, Menetou-Salon, Quincy) or Chenin Blanc (Vouvray, Coteaux de Layon), although some red wine is also produced from Cabernet Franc (Chinon) and Pinot Noir (Sancerre again). The range of styles to be found within the Loire are amazing - from the crisp and flinty minerality of Pouilly-Fume to the deep unctuosity of a mature sweet Vouvray, these are classics from the Old World which many in the New World have sought to imitate, and very few (if any) have bettered!
