There is a vast array of liqueurs on the market today covering pretty much the entire flavour spectrum. Traditional recipes like Benedictine and Chartreuse sit nicely alongside the more modern Illy Coffee and Amade Chocolate Orange liqueurs. These can of course be drunk as they were intended as an aperitif or after dinner as a digestif. However when combined in cocktails all sorts of rather interesting flavours can be created, leading to further taste experimentation!

Liqueurs are basically a combination of three or four elements which have been blended and often matured together. The key components are: some form of alcohol, flavours, sweeteners and often some colouring. The alcohol can be of various origins - possibly grain of some variety, or fruit based including of course grape derived brandy. The flavours used are classified as herbs, citrus fruit, stone fruit and kernel or beans. In general, fruit spirits are unsweetened, using the natural fruit flavour to make them palatable. Finally cream may be added to make a smooth and rich liqueur in which the alcohol acts as a preservative to prevent deterioration.
